SANITATION AND DISINFECTION is the most important part of management. Sanitation
means cleanliness at the farm to prevent outbreaks of diseases.
IMPORTANT POINTS FOR SANITATION:
- Farm buildings should be located away from any pond or any other such things because these act as breeding places for germs.
- The farm should be 200 feet away from the other farm.
- Orientation of the farm should be so that it provide maximum sunlight and ventilation.
- Floor and walls should have a plain surface. There should be no cracks and crevices to ensure complete disinfection.
- After a flock is disposed off, a rest of 20-30 days should be provided before bringing new birds. This will break the life cycle of germs due to unfavorable conditions.
- Diseased and sick birds should be kept away from healthy birds or culled.
- Dead birds should be properly disposed off as early as possible.
- Postmortem should be done, away from poultry house. After postmortem birds should be buried deep in soil or burnt or disposed in the disposal.
- There are a variety of disinfectants available nowadays. For
- any disinfectant to be effective in economical quantities, it is better
- applied to a dry cleaned or previously washed surface. Continuous
- use of certain chemicals, particularly at inadequate concentrations,
- may produce a population of microorganisms resistant to that
- chemical.
- The most common type of disinfectants include: creosoles,
- phenols, iodine, chlorine, formaldehyde and quaternary ammonium
- compounds. The microbicidal effectiveness of disinfectants may be
- estimated by mixing them with cultures of whatever microorganisms
- are to be destroyed and then measuring the time required for the
- substance to kill the organisms. The phenol co-efficient is based on
- the effectiveness of the test disinfectant as compared with that of
- phenol under the carefully standardised conditions.
